Partnership Enables Customers to Integrate and Replicate Heterogeneous Data With Significant Cost Savings

BURLINGTON, Massachusetts, November 2 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Attunity Ltd. (OTC BB: ATTUF.OB), a leading provider of real-time data integration and event capture software, announced today a strategic partnership to market solutions that enable real-time business intelligence and efficient data integration based on the companies’ data integration products. The solution, based on Microsoft’s SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) and Attunity’s low-impact change data capture (CDC) technology, enables efficient and real-time integration of heterogeneous data with significant cost savings.

Enabling real-time business intelligence and guaranteeing consistency of business information across heterogeneous data silos are challenges facing many organizations looking to improve customer service, optimize operations, and increase margins. Delivering on these capabilities in a cost-effective way has become more and more challenging as data volumes continue to grow, especially in heterogeneous IT environments.

Attunity is a Microsoft SQL Server connectivity partner and a leading independent provider of low-impact CDC technology that enables capturing and processing only the changes made to heterogeneous enterprise data sources, relational and non-relational, on platforms ranging from Windows to the Mainframe. The integrated offering of Attunity’s CDC with Microsoft’s SSIS is now available for many heterogeneous data sources and targets, enabling customers to reduce ETL load times and enable real-time, continuous data integration for data warehousing and operational reporting. By processing significantly lower data volumes, leveraging existing licenses and common skill sets, and using an easy to configure solution, customers can expect cost savings in hardware, software licenses, and implementation services.

“Microsoft SQL Server, as a business intelligence platform, provides customers with a powerful set of tools to integrate and manage their data in order to support modern business intelligence requirements,” said Tom Casey, general manager of SQL Server Business Intelligence at Microsoft Corp. “We value Attunity as a partner and its product suite extends SSIS to enable customers to address enterprise and real-time integration requirements across a heterogeneous environment using the tools and applications they are already familiar with.”

“The need for real-time information is growing and with it the costs of making it available for business users to support decisions and operations,” stated Shimon Alon, Attunity’s chief executive officer. “In having a strategic partnership with Microsoft, we have invested in extending our suite of ODR solutions integrated with Microsoft SQL Server so more customers can benefit from its cost-efficiencies and capitalize on the value of real-time information.”

IBM shows business intelligence, analytics tools October 30th, 2009

Big Blue shows off InfoSphere addons

By Chris Kanaracus
Published: 14:19 GMT, 27 October 09

IBM will announce a range of additions to its already burgeoning portfolio of BI (business intelligence) tools during its annual Information on Demand (IOD) conference.

New software for content analysis will help users mine unstructured data, such as a raft of customer emails, for insights, said Rob Ashe, general manager of BI and performance management. For example, a restaurant chain could determine which menu items are receiving particularly high praise or scorn, he said.

IBM is also announcing new analytics modules for tracking sales performance, worker recruitment and training, and supply chain management.

IBM faces antitrust and insider trading legal battles | IBM unveils high-end storage array | IBM VMControl falls short of virtual data centre goal | IBM adds Voltaire’s 10G Ethernet switch into data centre line

In addition, Big Blue plans to showcase a new mining toolkit for InfoSphere Streams, its software for real time data analysis, and Master Information Hub, an addon to its InfoSphere Master Data Management server.

Master data refers to data objects that are common to many applications in a company, such as “customer.” The Information Hub will allow customers to expand the range and contextual relevance of data in their MDM environments. For example, a consumer products company could relate a list of GPS coordinates to components it purchases.

Overall, the IOD lineup seems to reflect past shows, which were “overstuffed” with a passel of middle-of-the-road announcements, said Forrester Research analyst James Kobielus.

IBM’s real trump card, its recent purchase of predictive analytics vendor SPSS, should be taking centre stage instead, according to Kobielus.

“If they don’t play up the SPSS acquisition to the hilt, they’ll be doing themselves and customers a disservice,” he said.

There is no doubt IBM has big plans for SPSS. It formed a new services arm dedicated to business analytics, staffing it with some 4,000 consultants. A key focus of the organisation will be no doubt to push predictive analytics, which focus on determining future events and exploring “what if” scenarios, versus generating reports from batches of historical data.

Predictive analytics is the next hot area in BI, according to Forrester. In a report published earlier this year, the analyst firm called IBM’s SPSS purchase “a tipping point” followed by a wave of similar acquisitions.

SPSS will indeed have a significant profile at IOD, according to Ashe.

IBM will keep spending big on business intelligence October 30th, 2009

Recent money spent just the beginning claims Big Blue

News | 28 Oct 2009 :

IBM will continue acquiring companies involved in business intelligence and analytics, because demand from its clients for the technology is so great that it needs to keep pressing forward.

So claimed Ambuk Goyal, general manager for business analytics at IBM, in an interview at the company’s Information on Demand conference in Las Vegas.

IBM has already invested $12 billion over the last five years on business intelligence and analytics, with the recent purchase of business analytics company SPSS this year complementing a previous acquisition of Cognos.

He said the revolution around what was called ‘information led transformation’ was as big, or even bigger than what happened around ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) 20 years ago.

“Information led transformation has just begun,” said Goyal. “We are way ahead, but to me we are just beginning, because everybody is going to follow us. I say this is bigger than ERP and CRM (Customer Relationship Management) combined.”

He added: “If we want to remain ahead, we have to deliver value to our clients. Every day, clients are telling us what kind of problems they can’t solve.”

IBM had around 15,000 new clients in the business intelligence space, and Goyal said that it was looking ahead with a huge research department doing first of a kind projects,

“Our investment in this particular space will continue and we will build by partner,” he said. “There’s so much demand. It’s an investment trend. Not only IBM is behind it. When we went to Wall Street, we said this is our growth strategy.”

Of IBM’s previous investment, Goyal said that the purchase of predictive analytics firm SPSS nicely fitted with the Cognos systems it already had.

“Now you can make every point of impact, whether it is call centre or point of sale, far more effective,” he said. “Now you can make a predictive call centre or a predictive point of sale.”

He added: “We don’t have to integrate, so we can focus on innovation for businesses to transform themselves.”

Applying Mashups to Business Intelligence October 30th, 2009

admin

Posted by Loraine Lawson Oct 29, 2009 4:27:41 PM

Enterprises – and vendors – are still trying to figure out where mashups make the most sense.

The most popular, low-hanging fruit for mashups seems to be replacing portals, or at least making them more Web 2.0-like, and smaller data-integration tasks that don’t quite rate as a priority, but nonetheless need to be done for some business purpose.

One use that seems to be capturing the enterprise’s collective imagination is the idea of using mashups for business intelligence applications, according to a recent TechTarget article, “Enterprise mashups: Tools build data integrations.

As the article points out, one of the good things about mashups is you control how far you want to go. When it comes to using mashups for business intelligence, Forrester Research analyst James Kobielus says there’s four types of BI mashups, starting with lightweight, presentation mashup used to  generate reports and ranging to a still-theoretical collaborative mashup where data is stored centrally and governed by IT policies.

Kobielus says mashups aren’t something IT can force on users. The drive for adoption needs to come from users, and that means making it fun, highly interactive and – of course – easy.

Kobielus co-authored a white paper on the topic, “Mighty Mashups: Do-It-Yourself Business Intelligence For The New Economy,” which I found  for free on Inetsoft.com’s site. The report makes it clear business users are hungry for the sort of self-service, down-and-dirty data mashups can provide:

“Though still immature, BI mashup is well on the way to becoming an enterprise-ready approach for self-service development. The key enablers for enterprise-grade BI mashup are IT governance practices such as design templates, version controls, and monitoring. When supported by strong governance, information workers can mash up personalized views from reusable analytic components that are developed and managed for them by IT. Mashup enables nontechnical users to build dynamic views of disparate data that are personalized, context-rich, role-tailored, and ad hoc to explore this data in greater depth.”

You would think this would make mashups a shoe-in, but as with all things techie, politics and corporate culture can gum up the works. In part two of the TechTarget enterprise mashup series, Pfizer Research Fellow Michael Linhares relates how culture attitudes had to change first. Because of the importance of research findings, there were those who didn’t want to share their data. What’s more, IT had to expand its mindset to realize that not all infrastructure tools are IT tools, the article explains.

But if you can overcome these political and cultural issues, data mining can be a great way to justify your investment in mashup tools, according to Michael Ogrinz, an enterprise architect and author of “Mashup Patterns: Designs and Examples for the Modern Enterprise.” In a podcast, also published by TechTarget, Ogrinz says these types of mashup projects can deliver a quick ROI. In fact, he felt strongly enough about it that a good deal of his book focuses on data mining mashup patterns.

The TechTarget article lists a number of companies offering enterprise mashup products. Kobielus recommends those interested in enterprise BI mashups check Microsoft Project Gemini and IBM Cognos.

In my experience, analysts are a bit shy about recommending specific vendors when talking to journalist, so the fact he mentioned specific vendors and prodcuts caught my eye. His reason is that those are the two products he felt were far enough along to allow companies to reach that level four mashup maturity, where you can build collaborative mashup, data is centrally stored and the mashup permissions are governed by IT policies.

ERP and Business Intelligence Innovations Until recently it has been quite difficult to find an enterprise wide, full scale ERP business intelligence (BI) solution or software application that was both effective and affordable. Historically, the solution was finding separate BI solutions focusing on varying business processes and then bridging them together with customized programming. This resulted in sub-par solutions that required vast amounts of resources and time to get implemented which generated poor investment returns for many companies.

SWC Technology Partners Survey Campaign Uncovers Trends in Midmarket Information Technology October 29th, 2009

SWC Technology Partners Survey Campaign Uncovers Trends in Midmarket
Information Technology

OAK BROOK, Ill., Oct. 29 /PRNewswire/ — SWC Technology Partners has launched
a survey campaign that will reveal the evolving trends and tempo at middle
market IT departments. The surveys will provide new insight into the climate
at Midwest businesses as they re-prioritize, make do with fewer people and
smaller budgets, and work to increase or maintain market share in an
increasingly competitive marketplace.

The first SWC survey gauged the moods of 170 IT decision makers at midsize
businesses and divulges which projects hold top priority, which deliver the
greatest ROI and which areas are seeing the most staffing cuts this year. At
the same time, the survey exposed a potential risk and a paradox that
illustrates the current climate at many Midwest businesses.

IT and business-line managers taking part in the survey shared their opinions
on the technologies, strategies and tactics generating the greatest impact
during this challenging economy. The majority of responders were IT senior
leaders from organizations in Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana in industries
including manufacturing, retail, education, construction, healthcare,
accounting and non-profits. More than half of the respondents manage
environments with a user base between 100 and 2,000 individuals.

The Economy: Lower Revenues Yet Higher Market Share

More than 58 percent of respondents report lower revenues and 46 percent see
decreased profit margins this year. IT budget cuts or freezes have affected 62
percent of respondents. Yet, 89 percent of respondents report they have either
maintained or increased market share. Only 11 percent say they have lost
market share in recent months.

Of note is the contradictory manner in which the shrinking economy has
translated into market share. SWC President Bob Knott believes this could be a
result of the recession “weeding out” poorly performing businesses and the net
outcome is an increase in market share for stronger providers. Additionally,
companies may be tapping into new technologies to amplify their marketing
effectiveness, business intelligence and operating efficiencies. Either way,
Knott acknowledges that the survey respondents represent a more successful
group of organizations than the general business population.

IT Priorities: Security Rises to the Top

Respondents cite security as the highest priority technology project category,
with 55 percent indicating it holds top importance. Business intelligence is
the second highest priority, with 38 percent saying it is highly important.
Other top priorities are storage, web development and LAN/WAN infrastructure.
The least important technology project category is proprietary systems, with
57% indicating it holds low importance.

Of interest is that security projects typically have little or no impact on
revenue generation or creating operational efficiencies. This may reflect the
fact that IT managers are focusing their limited resources on crucial areas
that cannot be compromised, or it may be that that this category has been
neglected during the recession and managers fear the consequences of such
neglect.

Staffing: Application Development Grows; End User Support Shrinks

IT staffing levels remained generally steady for respondents over the past
year. However, the area seeing the greatest increase in staffing (13 percent)
as well as outsourcing (6 percent) is application development, not surprising
as you consider the complex, customized ERP and/or proprietary environment
work that are typically seen as mission-critical.

End user support was cited most often as experiencing a reduction in staff (13
percent of respondents), followed by network management and email management.
These figures may reflect a trend to outsource these functions to a third
party through managed services.

At the same time, all categories surveyed saw a net decrease to internal
staff.

Technology ROI: Virtualization, Collaboration and Web Development Deliver

Survey respondents cite virtualization as the technology with the greatest
return on investment justification (109 votes), followed by
collaboration/document sharing (97) and web development (90 votes) as most
often having either high or medium cost justification. Respondents rate
proprietary systems as having the lowest ROI justification.

ROI has been thrust to the forefront of any mid-market business decision.
Determining which technology provides the greatest, and more often, the
fastest ROI has become a first step in selecting which projects to advocate to
senior leadership.

Virtualization technology – consolidating multiple computing environments into
virtual servers that run on the same physical machine — is the clear winner
in this category. Virtualization has become a widely adopted and accepted
platform to consolidate and manage server infrastructure, thereby reducing
costs associated with hardware acquisition and management as well as reducing
the physical footprint of the server room itself.

Those surveyed also report that collaboration and document management
technology provide great efficiencies around workflow and business processes.
Enhancements to document management help them reduce inefficient periods of
search and content creation.

The Risk of Reliance on a Single Individual

Forty percent of respondents indicate that their organization is absolutely
dependant on a single individual for his or her systems knowledge and
expertise. Only 8% of respondents say they never had an absolute dependency on
a single individual for his or her systems knowledge.

This dynamic has presented itself frequently within the mid-market, and the
SWC survey responses support the fact that dependency on a single IT
professional remains relatively prevalent. While the survey did not explore
the vulnerabilities this situation presents, budget cuts, reduction in
staffing and islands of dependency can become a recipe for disaster. It may be
this formula that has led to the increase in managed environments noted
earlier.

Looking Ahead

Overall, 51 percent of respondents categorize their business outlook for the
next 12 months as “cautiously optimistic.” However, slightly more than eight
percent say they are pessimistic, and three percent classify themselves as
“highly pessimistic.”

Bob Knott, President of SWC Technology Partners, said, “This survey provides
insight into what drives the technology decisions in the middle market right
now. The biggest surprise to me was the degree of reliance on a single person
for IT oversight and expertise, and the fact that survey participants report a
stable or increased market share despite budget and staffing reductions. After
analyzing these results, we’ve decided to conduct additional surveys to delve
deeper into these issues and look beyond the numbers to understand what’s
driving these actions.”

A follow-up survey will reveal whether technology priorities have shifted as
the calendar year concludes, whether staffing reductions flatten and whether
top-line technology priorities change. SWC also seeks to uncover the factors
that enabled companies to maintain or increase market share despite cuts in IT
budgets and staff.

Jaspersoft Named an Innovation Information Access Company to Watch by Leading Research Firm October 29th, 2009

admin

Jaspersoft, provider of the world’s most widely used business intelligence (BI) software, today announced that it has been chosen by leading research firm IDC as an “Innovative Information Access Company Under $100M to Watch(1).” Jaspersoft is the only open source software company to make the report.

Nine companies were chosen by IDC analysts for harnessing information in the enterprise with applications that assess, manage and analyze data. IDC assessed hundreds of companies in the BI, search and content relationship management (CRM) space with a two-phased process for determining its Innovation Awards contest winners. The first round consisted of a panel of IDC analysts who specialize in access technology. The second round evaluations narrowed the entries with assessments by key IDC research executives.

IDC’s “Companies to Watch” reports are a qualitative evaluation of a set of vendors within a specific market – they are not a stack ranking nor do they represent an exhaustive evaluation of all companies in a segment or a comparative ranking of the companies in the report.

“IDC is one of the world’s most respected research firms, so we applaud our customers, the vibrant community that distinguishes Jaspersoft, and the global Jaspersoft team for working together on a level that has garnered this praise,” said Brian Gentile, CEO of Jaspersoft. “We are experiencing first-hand the trends that the IDC report points to, especially the advanced expectations from a new generation of executives and managers who demand more from their information access tools. We’re committed to delivering on those expectations.”

IDC’s “Companies-to-Watch” were identified by their ability to address the latest customer requirements in the following categories: innovations in the user interface that require little training and incorporate Web 2.0 and social networking concepts; unified access and management of all types of information; and intelligent process automation that mechanize repeatable, operational decision-making.

“Innovation for broader, more comprehensive and more pervasive access to information is occurring at a rapid pace,” said Dan Vesset, program vice president, Business Analytics at IDC and co-author of this week’s report. “Newly minted executives, managers and operational staff who have been exposed to better, more integrated information access, analysis and management tools will expect to use them to increase the performance and competitiveness of their organizations.”

Jaspersoft was also chosen for its open source software technology and community development model, which IDC reports is helping to accelerate BI deployments among small, medium and large companies. IDC also cites that Jaspersoft’s development model creates a “community effect” that enables extended design and testing.
